Atlantic City-wide Dredging Program

Project Description

ACT Engineers, Inc. is providing comprehensive City dredging services to the City of Atlantic City.  The City and Southern New Jersey’s economic viability relies heavily on recreational boating and tourism as well as commercial fishing and marine industries.  The City is committed to facilitating keeping area waters safe and navigable, which requires maintenance dredging, efficient and cost-effective dredge material de-watering and disposal and, when feasible, beneficial re-use of the dredged material.  In lieu of small, disjunctive dredging projects by property owners,  the commercial fishing fleet, marinas, water-dependent industry and the City, ACT planned and is implementing a comprehensive cost-effective dredging program.  The proposed program would provide the City and it’s stakeholders with greater flexibility to adapt to changing depositional patters and the corresponding dredging needs.

ACT has completed a topographic bathymetric survey and data processing of Atlantic City’s Back Bay and Inlet Marina Area waterways.  Dredge prism design maps were prepared for use in applying for City-wide maintenance dredging permits from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE).

In accordance with an NJDEP-approved sediment sampling plan, four sampling events, with more than 80 samples, were conducted by ACT and laboratory-analyzed for physical and/or chemical parameters.

Permit applications, identifying environmental constraints and assessing impacts were prepared and submitted to the NJDEP and USACE for the proposed dredging of  more than 600,000 cubic yards of material.  Dredged material disposal alternatives  were evaluated and potential beneficial material re-use options identified.
