Brick Township Flood Mitigation Concept Engineering
Project Description
ACT Engineers, Inc. conducted research and review of ongoing tidal and stormwater flooding in 13 back bay communities in Brick Township. ACT performed field surveying to collect additional topographic and bulkhead elevation information to supplement available LiDAR data. Stormwater information from the Township’s GIS system was incorporated into the inundation mappings. Historical tide gage data for the Mantoloking Tide Gage was reviewed to identify the frequency and severity of high tides in this portion of Barnegat Bay. A hydrologic and hydraulic analysis was performed for each neighborhood to evaluate the capacity of the existing stormwater system and to identify potential upgrades to the systems. Multiple conceptual design solutions including check valves, raising roadway elevations, raising and/or installation of bulkheads, installation of additional stormwater management facilities, nature-based mitigation measures and the installation of stormwater pump stations were considered. Cost estimates were prepared for the identified conceptual solutions for each neighborhood. ACT’s findings as well as proposed short term and long term conceptual solutions were presented to the Township and residents during four public meetings.
ACT Engineers is also coordinating the preparation of grant applications for Brick Township to help secure funding for the design and implementation of the flood mitigation measures identified during our investigation. This work includes a cost benefit analysis and future resiliency analysis considering rising sea levels.
